11 Famous Faces of Stockport

We’ve put together a list of famous faces from Stockport. Some were born here, some moved here & some stayed here! We know we’ve missed a few off but lets be honest we’d be here all day if we wrote about everyone… Yes, Stockport does have quite a range! We’ve picked some obvious names and some less well known ones – let us know who we have missed.

1 – Claire Foy

Claire Foy, widely known for her performance as Queen Elizabeth in the recent Netflix series The Crown, was born right here in Stockport in Stepping Hill Hospital. It is hard to say if Claire acknowledges she is from Stockport but as she was born here we are going to take it as a claim.

So it is true.. we all come from regal Stock.

2 – Fred Perry

Fred Perry, the tennis legend behind the popular clothing brand, was the tennis world world number 1. He won 3 consecutive Wimbledon championships and prior to Andy Murray was the last British player to win at Wimbledon. 

Fred Perry was born in Brinnington at his house on Carrington Road which today has a blue plaque highlighting his incredible achievements.  Stockport also has a public path named Fred Perry Way.

3 – Sarah Harding (Girls Aloud)

Before joining Girls Aloud, the late Sarah Harding was a student at Hazel Grove High School and later attended Stockport College to learn Hair & Beauty. During her time in Stockport she worked with the promotion team for the recently demolished nightclubs at Grand Central – Heaven and Hell we presume?

4 – Dominic Howard (Muse)

Dominic Howard, the drummer from Muse, was born in Stockport in 1977 and lived in the area until he moved to Devon at the age of 8. Muse have grown to become arguably one of the largest British bands in Britain at present.

5 – Dominic Monaghan

Stockport has a hobbit of sorts.. Dominic Monaghan was cast in Lord of the Rings as Merry – a hobbit from The Shire. He moved to Stockport  when he was 11 years old and attended Aquinas College for his sixth form education. 

6 – Nathan Aspinall

From tennis to darts. Nathan Aspinall, who proudly represents his home town of Stockport, won the 2019 UK Darts open against the former world champion Rob Cross. With an exciting career ahead of him we hope he continues to impress. 

7 – Tess Daly

Born at Stepping Hill Hospital and spending her early years towards Derbyshire in New Mills, Tess Daly earned notoriety through her modelling career and going on to present Strictly Come Dancing.

8 – Michelle Keegan

Stockport has produced a number of soap stars throughout the years but Michelle Keegan seems to take the top spot. Earning fame through her role as Tina in Coronation Street, she later starred in Tina & Bobby, Our Girl and more.

9 – Ricky Hatton

Moving on to boxing, Stockport can add Ricky Hatton to its belt. Born at Stepping Hill Hospital and growing up in Hyde – he became a household name during his time in the ring. Throughout his career he had 48 fights, won 45 and lost only 3. 

10 – Sacha Dhawan

Sacha Dhawan was born in Stockport and grew up in Bramhall where he found his passion for acting. Sacha attended Aquinas College for his Sixth Form studies. He first stepped onto the big screen with his performance in The History Boys, which led to him securing roles in The Last Tango in Halifax, Line of Duty, Doctor Who and more recently playing Davos in Marvel’s Iron Fist.

 

11 – Phil Foden

Growing up in Edgeley and born at Stepping Hill Hospital, Phil Foden is one of the shining lights of the Manchester City squad. Phil is the youngest player to gain a Premier League winners medal which is quite an achievement. Maybe some day he might come home and play for Stockport County… We can only dream.
