The Glass Spider – Relaunch

Stockport has a new bar in town – it’s unique, has style, and is already creating a bit of a buzz in the town centre. The Glass Spider is located just off Stockport Market Place in the seemingly ever-changing venue which has recently housed Vinabod and The Allotment.

The Glass Spider is the invention of Joseph Patton who already has an established bar on Little Underbank by the name of The Cracked Actor. He likes to refer to his new establishment as The Cracked Actor’s ‘evil twin’ ready to take on the Stockport bar scene with passion, class and a point of difference.

The interior, based on a traditional early 20th century bank, mimics all the luxury of the era. The use of gold look bars, stained glass, Venetian chairs and traditional lighting all works to convey a historic milieu. The interior has been crafted by Stockport businesses – the stained glass being handmade in Edgeley and the lighting from Hillgate’s Agapanthus Interiors.

Joe’s aim is to create a sense of luxury and class in the Stockport bar scene which is why he is enforcing a dress code on its patrons, he told us “what happened to putting on some nice shoes to go for a drink”. He understandably, after the immense work to create The Glass Spider wants his customers to blend into the era he has tried to recreate.

The bar itself, stocked with a huge variety of spirits that have been curated over the year, mirrors an old bank teller. You will be served through bars and a conveniently covid secure screen that was designed way before todays current events.

The beer on draft ranges from handpicked craft ales to fantastic lesser known German lager. Joe has teamed up again with local distillers Hatters Gin to create the bar’s own signature spirit which sits proudly on the top shelf. The bar is currently not serving food but plans are in motion to offer a lunch and evening menu in the coming months.

One of The Glass Spider’s most interesting features is the ability to sit exclusively in your own partially enclosed private booth – there are two available of different sizes. These are allocated on a first come first serve basis but will be available to hire at a later date.

The location of this bar has a history of consistent change but we believe that this new institution is here to stay. Next time you are looking to step back into a different era, hear the smooth sounds of days gone by and enjoy a local drink, The Glass Spider will have you covered.
