Baekdu – Stockport’s Korean BBQ Restaurant

Baekdu – Stockport’s Korean BBQ Restaurant

Baekdu

In awe of the recent Winter Olympics in South Korea – I was reminded of a restaurant that I recently became aware of.

It goes by the name of Baekdu (a North Korean mountain).

The restaurant is oddly located in what appears to be an old pub style building just off Lords Street. I cant imagine it’s the footfall that brings the diners in; however, there is a public car park opposite which is incredibly convenient.

The restaurant, it its own words, labels itself as Korean BBQ.

The concept is based around charcoal fire pits that are set within the tables. Each table has its own pit that the chefs use to grill, BBQ and cook your food right in front of you.

After some contemplation I opted to order the spicy marinated chicken. In addition to this I selected the lettuce & spring onion side which the menu highly recommends. I am sooo glad I did this.

Once the chicken is grilled, the server places a curved lettuce leaf into a bowl, then adds some of the seasoned spring onion and finally takes the chicken off the grill and adds it to your already delightful looking salad.

As you can see from the photos below the lettuce is used as a kind of wrap. It is a little delicate to pick up but it creates a great authentic Korean dish that is full of flavour.

My visit to Baekdu was my first experience of Korean food, usually I am a little tentative because I worry about the chopsticks, how to navigate my way around the menu, and the pronunciation of some of the dishes.

Having said that the staff were very attentive, the menu had numbers which made it easier to order, and the BBQ you eat with your hands so it ticked off all my ignorant insecurities.

With all that in mind I had a great experience and would highly recommend a visit. Although, I believe they are closed for refurbishment from 11th of March to the 27th. Just a heads up.

Baekdu is another example of the Stockport food scene growing and diversifying; we just need to make sure that we give them our support and embrace the local.

5 Things You Should Know About The White Lion Pub

5 Things You Should Know About The White Lion Pub

The White Lion pub, situated in Stockport Underbank, has recently been given a new opportunity to return to its former glory after sitting idle for the past few years. Plans were unveiled by Stockport Council to transform the building into residential apartments and a restaurant.

As one of the oldest buildings in Stockport we decided to take a look into its long history and see what we could find out. Here’s five of our interesting (and slightly bizarre) findings!

1 – The building itself dates as far back as the 14th century and is Stockport’s oldest hostelry (hostelry: an inn or pub). It has been modified and rebuilt several times over the centuries and has been Grade II listed since 1993.

2 – As a coaching inn based on the main route in and out of Stockport, The White Lion could hold up to 20 horses at any given time in its stables.

3 – In years gone by, the pub’s garden led to the now covered river Mersey – rumour has it the guests were entitled to fish for salmon during their stay.

4 – Allegedly, a “Wife Sale” took place at The White Lion in 1831, during which a man called William Clayton sold his wife for 5 shillings (this equates to roughly £151).

5 – The pub’s landlord apparently owned a cannon. He would fire it to inform the towns people of the arrival of the mail coach that brought the news from London; which was then read out by the town crier. The canon was also fired in 1815 to announce the British victories in the battle of Waterloo.

The Light Cinema Stockport – The Social Cinema

The Light Cinema Stockport – The Social Cinema

The Light Cinema

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Grand Opening of The Light Cinema on Thursday the 23rd of November. I managed to get an invite because of my small, but growing contribution to Stockport.

I apologise for the informal nature of this post and it’s more conversational tone but I thought why not write it this way!?

When I entered the The Light Cinema the first thing that struck me was the truly modern concept they have created for the cinema experience. For the owners, the experience of watching a film is not just about the film, it’s about the conversation you have before and after it. We have all finished watching a film and whilst meandering through the seats tried to discuss, what we saw, what we think, and whether it was worth paying for. We all tend to do this, then get in the car and drive home. But, at The Light Cinema, they want to encourage this conversation to continue. They do this by adding a modern bar to the foyer that uses comfortable seats and low lighting to produce a social space for discussion.

There is also small seating areas around the cinema that almost feel like they are there so you can have a spontaneous debrief of your recent viewing. As a huge film fan myself this concept seems incredibly intriguing because sometimes the discussion after the film is just as important as watching it.

The Light Cinema still has the usual popcorn, sweets and fizzy drink options but they are presented in a way that isn’t tacky. To be fair anything is better than Cineworld’s sticky carpets, uncomfortable seats and dated interior. The seats at The Light Cinema however, I must say, are some of the comfiest I have ever experienced – not to mention the fact that all the chairs recline and come with your own personal table (oh the luxury).

I would highly recommend visiting The Light Cinema and seeing if this contemporary cinema suits you as well it did me.
