Macclesfield Canal – High Lane – Get Outdoors

Macclesfield Canal

The Macclesfield Canal opened in 1831 to work as a trade waterway for the local mills, quarries and potteries. The canal cost £320,000 to build and spans around 27 miles. Notable areas along the route are Marple, High Lane, Higher Poynton and Macclesfield.

Interestingly the High Lane Arm of the canal is home to the North Cheshire Cruising Club. The NCCC was the first narrow boat cruising club in the country and was founded in 1943. Pretty cool right!

Whether you wish to walk down the towpaths or jump on a narrow boat the Macclesfield Canal winds past scenic countryside, Victorian mills and pretty villages that have an array of local pubs and eateries.

As I grew up in High Lane I can say from experience that walking along the canal is a great way of getting outdoors and appreciating the local environment! Just make sure you bring your wellies!
